The bike trip I am going to tell you happened on October 1st, the national day, several years ago. Back then, my classmates and I decided to go to Tian’anmen Square to watch the flag hoist to celebrate the 69th birthday of the People’s Republic of China.

我要告诉你的自行车之旅发生在几年前的十月一日，即国庆那天。那时候，我同学和我决定到天安门广场上看升旗，以庆祝中华人民共和国69岁的生日。

It was an activity on the spur of the moment. We did not plan anything until about 10 o’clock in the evening. Then one of my roommates proposed that since all of us had nothing important to do tomorrow, why not we went to the square to watch the flag hoist. This article is from laokaoya website. We thought that was a brilliant idea. But because it was already pretty late, the public transport had stopped running and taking a taxi would exceed our budget. So we decided to ride bikes.

It was an arduous journey, covering nearly 18 kilometres according to the map.  None of us had such an experience before. At first, we rode as fast as we could, and even raced with each other on the empty road. But soon we exhausted our strength and the only reason for me to carry on was that I did not want to look inferior to the others. We set out at around 11 and arrived there at half past 3 in the morning.

Two factors have made this bike trip unforgettable. First, it is the longest trip I had ever taken by bike and this record has not been broken until now. Second, it is the only time I watched the flag hoist at Tian’anmen Square.
